One Plaid Shirt Two Ways

Sometimes I want to buy everything I see on the racks at Old Navy…and other times, not so much. Last weekend, my friend wanted some help shopping (and I couldn’t say no to that!) and we headed to Old Navy. I didn’t see too much, but I fell in love with this shirt. I continue my fascination with button ups!

I have been unbelievably busy at work, so I decided to wear this shirt the casual way with white denim. But, I thought I would show a different way to wear it, too…if I wanted to wear it a little more dressed up. That’s what I love about button up shirts; you can wear them so many different ways! (And did I mention this shirt is $12 on sale?!?!?)

How would you wear this shirt?

What I Wore – Bright Blazer

I used to wear blazer all the time at a previous employer. Believe it or not, they still required business dress e-v-e-r-y day. So let’s just say when I left that employer and got to dress business casual, blazers quickly moved to the back of the closet.

But, I found this bright beauty at Macy’s when I was in Chicago this summer. For a whopping $30. That’s right. Michael Michael Kors linen blazer for $30. Don’t mind if I do. It also went so well with the earrings the hubs picked up for me when he was on a business trip in NH (insert awwwwww’s here please).

Kind of a funny story about when I wore this, too. We had a new client come in that day and my “brotha from anotha motha” was in there with me – he has a keen eye for fashion as well. When we were talking about the design of their materials he goes “Well, it’s obvious that Emily isn’t afraid of color.” And everyone just laughed. But he’s right. I’m not. And I love it.

So here’s how I styled my new bright blazer…

What I Wore – Polka Dots Please

There’s nothing better than a good polka dot…well…anything. As soon as I saw this shirt on the J. Crew sales rack, I had to snatch it up. And snatch it up I did.

I’ve had such a fascination with button ups over the last year. Why? Because you can pretty much wear them year round! Who doesn’t love things that you can wear during every season! Not only did I think about wearing it now in the summer styled like I did below, but I thought about it in the fall and winter, too, being layered underneath a sweater or under a blazer.

Somewhere along the lines, I heard some great advice (that I will admit I don’t ALWAYS listen to myself). When you are in the store or shopping online, if you can’t think of three different ways to wear that one piece, then ask yourself if it really needs to make a home in your closet. So next time you are wavering on whether or not to buy the “latest must have,” ask yourself how you can wear it.

What questions do you ask yourself before you decide to make a clothing purchase?
